The Ukraine
"The Ukraine" is incorrect both grammatically and politically. The use of the article relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as "The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic". Now, it should be merely "Ukraine".
The aim of the project is to revise the approach to nation branding and further exemplify it by representing typographically a particular country – Ukraine. I designed a set of icons interpreting the contemporary image of Ukraine.
On this icon Ukrainian man is throwing a Molotov cocktail. This took place at the Ukrainian revolution in the winter of 2013, when pro-Russian police forces of the previous government attacked protesters. Some people were fighting back with Molotov cocktails. First, the reader tries to read the icon. If he fails to do so, he can then refer to the additional explanation, which is the photograph hidden inside the page fold.
The final output consists of the book and three posters telling the story of Ukraine to the foreign public.
